In the current world, there are so many issues affecting countries around the world such as civil wars, political persecution, and human rights violation. As a result, a large number of the population has been displaced, while others have sought refuge in foreign countries.
The issue of immigration is serious and should be taken with a lot of weight. Most of the governments have not handled the crisis properly and is why some brilliant minds have come up and formed various non-governmental organizations to tackle the problem. They have done a great job in helping ease the situation.
Some of those people who have stood up for immigrants are Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin. The two are co-founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times. They have been funding several migrant rights organizations in Arizona. In spite of being harassed by police due to their fight against social injustice, Lacy and Larkin have continued helping those in need.
They have set aside funds that support the activities of those groups that fight for civil, migrant, and human rights. In addition to this, they advocate for freedom of speech and encourage people to participate in matters affecting the society.
One of the organizations supported by Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund is Justice for Immigrants & Families Project. The fact that Arizona is home to more than 300,000 undocumented people calls for an organization that caters for the interest of these immigrants. The organization has come to their rescue whereby they have been promoting access to justice in the area. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter and Jim Larkin |LinkedIn
It directly represents immigrants by paying for their legal fees including hiring lawyers. In addition to this, the group hires civil education officers to enlighten the group regarding their rights as well as how to integrate well with the locals.
The Colibrí Center for Human Rights is another organization that is supported by Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund. It helps immigrants locate their missing relatives. In their journey towards the US, immigrants pass through dangerous terrains to avoid being spotted by border patrol officers. Some may end up missing or dead, as the route passes through steep terrains and deep forests.
The organization pays forensic officers to conduct a search to determine whether the missing person is alive. It has helped many families reunite with their loved ones. The organization also ensure that immigrants live well with the residents by helping them settle well within the shortest time possible.
Another organization that has benefited from Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund is Justice that Works. The organization fight injustices conducted by the police forces in Phoenix. Actually, it has identified the area Sheriff as a violent individual who does not believe in peaceful negotiation.
The organization is planning to construct a community court in the area to reduce the number of people going to jail and subsequently lower the crime rate. The aim of Justice that Works is to transform the community so that residents can live peacefully with no harassment from law enforcement officers.
